Causes of matted carpet
When carpet is matted, fibers fold over each other, creating a flat look on the surface. An unsightly matted floor harbors extra dirt and debris, ruining a room's appearance. This soft surface flooring becomes matted for several reasons:
- Wear from dirt accumulation over an extended period
- Pressure from heavy furniture or electronics
- Lack of regular cleaning and maintenance
- The incorrect thickness of the padding
- Heavy foot traffic
Fixes
If matting is excessive and can?t be fixed, a new nylon carpet would serve you well since these fibers bounce back quickly after compression. But first, there are several methods for fluffing up these floors that you can try:
- Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, wait 5 to 10 minutes, and vacuum thoroughly in rows and in one direction.
- Use a carpeting rake, which loosens dirt and picks up pet hair, and vacuum thoroughly.
- Apply ice cubes to the flattened spots (or a spritz of water), and after the ice melts, brush the fibers with your fingers and let them dry completely.
- Place a damp towel on the carpet and run a hot iron over the towel.
- Then, steam clean the floors or schedule a professional cleaning.
