Vinyl flooring is 100% waterproof, meaning that it can be spilled on or submerged, and it will be fine. Just wipe it dry! While luxury vinyl (LVF) is thicker and more durable, a newer version, called waterproof flooring, is engineered to provide the highest moisture resistance level.
Waterproof vs. water-resistant
Many use these words interchangeably, but that is not correct. When something is impenetrable to liquid, it is made from waterproof materials; in this case, the material itself. The capability is inherent, and, as this flooring, it's waterproof from both the top and bottom. When something can be highly water-resistant, there's still a chance of liquid seeping into the core and staining, peeling, and rippling.
LVF: High-end style, affordability, and durability
The luxury version is considered a premium, yet affordable, version of vinyl. With true-to-life images of wood, stone, and tile, available in a wide variety of brilliant colors and patterns, photography is taken with digital photography, showing knots, grains, swirls, and veining variations. Micro Beveling and embossing add depth, dimension, and textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed.
This has a design option where the material can be cut into planks to impersonate wood boards, called vinyl plank flooring, or the square, groutable, tile-sized pieces usually used to simulate tile or stone (although sometimes wood), called LVT flooring. Some feel the extra seams add even more to the realism.
Waterproof flooring: another version of luxury vinyl
This has the same style s LVF but is thicker, more durable, and has technologically advanced cores. These cores are WPC (wood plastic composite) and SPC (stone plastic composite) that won't peel or ripple ever, no matter how much water it's exposed to or for how long.
Both are easy to care for, with just a daily sweeping and periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Installation can be a floating floor where the pieces click together, mat, then hover over the subfloor without nails or glue. Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level.
